What Lies Beneath…
My name is Lee Pennington, and I am a local artist in Atlanta Georgia.
I grew up with an unusual desire to make creations out of other objects. I enjoyed looking at an item that most people would consider junk or trash, and imagine what I could make from it.This alongside my growing love for Halloween, and all things spooky, became the recipe that would create the mad scientist I am today. Unfortunately, I wasn’t great with science. So I just had to stick to making monsters the old-fashioned way; by cutting shit up and sewing it all together.
After high school I started working at the local haunted house, and became obsessed. At that time I believed that I had finally found my calling. I wanted to learn everything there was about making a haunted house. After 2 years of working as a seasonal actor I worked my way onto the build crew. I started by assisting the builders and creators and was soon given the opportunity to create things myself. Soon I went from decorating small corners to designing entire rooms. I also began to learn how the monsters were made and the tricks and techniques that went into all the art that helped create this place. Working in this haunted house pointed me in the direction that I wanted to take my creations and gave me the skills to create my own monsters, or as I like to call them my “Abominations”! After working almost 15 years at the haunted house I decided that it was time to move on and do something a little different. I will always be grateful for everything I learned working there, but I wanted to grow in a different direction.
I'm not sure where my art will take me or what the next creation might look like or mean. The only thing I know for sure is that I want to create things I love. I want to continue to learn new ways to create and find new mediums to create with. My dream is to create art for a living and be happy doing it. I don't want to be rich or famous. I just want to create my art and live comfortably. I'm still working on that part. Maybe I'll accomplish that one day, or maybe I won't. I think the important thing is to do what makes me happy, and making weird creepy stuff out of doll parts, mannequins, and bones makes me happy. As long as I can do that then I've already accomplished that part of the dream. If you are reading this then maybe you can help me accomplish the other part. Or maybe not. That's ok. Maybe you like, or love my art or maybe you're deeply disturbed by it. I'm cool with that too. Either way Im glad you were interested enough to read this long ass bio.
